But she apparently was still just a bit too cooperative for Alaska Republican primary voters, who didn’t like her vote for the Wall Street bailout in 2008 (never mind that the Bush White House was desperate for the plan, worried that a bank implosion would lead to another Great Depression). In a Congress hampered by a Sharks vs. Jets standoff, Murkowski apparently just didn’t obstruct enough for angry Alaska primary voters, who nominated Tea Party movement-approved Joe Miller.
Murkowski was never a yeller, and showed a compassion and collegiality that is disappearing from the Senate. In 2007, former GOP Idaho Sen. Larry Craig was largely shunned by his colleagues, who were scandalized over Craig’s arrest for allegedly soliciting sex from another man in an airport bathroom. While other Republican senators treated Craig like he had cooties, Murkowski walked across the Senate floor and very publicly gave Craig a hug. It wasn’t a political statement, or judgment on what may or may not have happened in that men’s room. It was just a show of friendship and support for a colleague who was going through the worst time of his life.

There have also been calls to hire a private security firm, track court cases involving suspects in local crimes, ask landlords not to rent to people who have long criminal histories, and expand the city’s Purple Line bus circulator into Charles Village until a proposed trolley line between downtown Baltimore and Charles Village is built.
“The idea being, if there was some regular, reliable (public) transportation to this area, people would be safer” than if they have to walk, Clarke said.
On Saturday, tensions ran high over what approaches the community should take to help Northern District police fight crime.
Jennifer Martin, of Charles Village, questioned the effectiveness of patrols in general, arguing it is “pie in the sky” to place “a cop on every corner,” and that strengthening neighborhoods block by block by making sure residents get to know one another and are watchful will provide “more bang for the buck.”
But Peter Duvall, of the Old Goucher neighborhood in south Charles Village, said late-night patrols have helped reduce prostitution, a big problem in the area.

Declaring war on negotiations promoted by U.S. President Barack Obama a few hours before he was to inaugurate fresh talks at a White House banquet with the Israeli and Palestinian leaders, Hamas militants who are backed by Iran said the killings were just the first phase.
“This attack is a chain in a series of attacks, some have been executed, and others will follow,” Abu Ubaida, a spokesman for the armed wing of Hamas, told Reuters.
PAPER SAYS BRUNI ‘DESERVES TO DIE’
TEHRAN – A hardline Iranian daily stepped up its attack on France’s first lady Carla Bruni, saying on Tuesday the “Italian prostitute” deserved to die for supporting an Iranian woman sentenced to death by stoning.
“This Italian prostitute’s indignation at Kayhan’s report came while she has had illegitimate relationships with different people before and after marrying (French President Nicolas) Sarkozy,” Kayhan said.

… It was six months before we’d be driving somewhere that he’d tell me what he’d done the previous night. Another six months before he’d tell me anything he was feeling,” Lawler continues. “This was a kid who’d learned not to trust people because they’d let him down.”
Foster kids often move from placement to placement with few belongings, not even photos of their siblings and families of origin. However, one possession that Ricky allowed Lawler to view offered insight into his silence.
“He kept a compiled ‘book’ of himself, awards from completing different programs, and he had family pictures in there,” says Lawler, adding that Ricky has had 16 various placements since entering the foster system at age six, including stays with three different sets of foster parents.
Ricky had pictures of each foster family, two dogs he loved at one home, a professional picture of himself as a baby, pictures of his half-siblings and his grandmother, and a photograph of his mother, a heroin and crack addict and North Avenue prostitute.

Is that supposed to be some sort of mitigating factor for Milbank? He admits to being a leftist, but because the most fringeworthy left doesn’t accept him are we supposed to slap him on the back and welcome him to the right side of the aisle?
The fact is he’s still a leftist ideologue and his work should be taken as that of a leftist ideologue, no matter whether he isn’t left enough for the left-wing fringe.
But let’s have some fun with Milbank’s distinction-without-a-difference style of reasoning. Let’s take his logic and see what other situations we can excuse using it…
As a young adult, John Doe dealt drugs and ran prostitutes but he was never accepted by the Hell’s Angels, so he’s not one of those guys, I’ll tell you what!

SHOCKING NEWS
The call in Iran’s state-run media for the execution of France’s first lady, the Italian-born model and actress Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, sent shock waves through the French and Italian embassies in Washington on Tuesday.
Italian Ambassador Giulio Terzi di Sant’Agata said Italians are “outraged” by the blood-chilling report in Iran’s Kayhan newspaper, which also called the first lady a “French prostitute.” Another report condemning Mrs. Bruni-Sarkozy was carried on the website of Iran’s government-controlled group of news outlets.
Mrs. Bruni-Sarkozy, the wife of French President Nicolas Sarkozy since 2008, caused the Iranian media to explode in fury by signing a petition, along with other French celebrities, calling for the release of Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani, who was sentenced to be stoned to death for adultery. She also was convicted of helping murder her husband. The 43-year-old mother of two confessed to the crimes after Iranian jailers flogged her 99 times. She later retracted her confession.

Both the War Room and Safe Neighborhoods shared an interest in targeting individual criminals known to be violent. Criminologists who have studied Baltimore have concluded that just a few thousand hardcore criminals cause much of the city’s mayhem, and Jessamy says she has targeted them—and locked up “thousands” of them. Yet violent crime continues to strike with stunning regularity.
This fact, along with her insistence that she doesn’t know why Bealefeld came out against her during the campaign, shows that Jessamy is out of touch with reality, Bernstein says. But Bernstein’s reality may be different from Baltimore’s.
In a city where large swaths of the population see the police as the enemy, Jessamy’s attack-the-police-and-treat-the-offenders philosophy resonates. “My opponent wants to leave out the community,” Jessamy told the Canton crowd.
Bernstein’s “pro-prosecution,” pro-police message likely resonates most with voters in Canton, Federal Hill, Pigtown, and other neighborhoods where house prices (and mortgages) have increased even while street crime—prostitution, petty drug dealing, assaults, and vandalism—have continued apace. They mostly trust the police. They don’t understand why their city has to be lawless.

While playing a reverend presiding over a funeral, Dominic Hoffman introduces us to “three C’s” that have nothing to do with gemstones: clarity, closure, and the circle of life. These concepts become the warp and weft of the story Hoffman weaves about a man who has died a mysterious death, and another who is searching for clues to the first man’s demise. In his search, the second man (represented by the audience) meets a host of characters including an expat British cabbie, a resident of a crack house who’s contemplating jumping from the roof, a Beverly Hills call girl, a gay dancer in his West Hollywood studio, and a landlord who fastidiously trims his rosebushes. Each of Hoffman’s representations of these diverse personae is distinct and memorable, but some of the funniest lines come from the roof-dwelling man’s riffs on race and stereotypes. He is mad about a lot of things, but he doesn’t “call it anger.” To him it’s just “a logical response to a fucked up …
