The Secret Service has assigned crack wordsmiths to write “rules of conduct” for agents abroad, to make clear that excessive drinking, entertaining foreigners in their hotel rooms and “cavorting in disreputable establishments” will not be tolerated. Mark Sullivan, trying to save his job as director of the agency, urges his employes to “consider your conduct through the lens of the past several weeks.” What better lens than the lens of a Video Baby Monitor, with or without the Night Light and Lullaby Camera?
The military, not yet recovered from the shock of learning that American soldiers joined the Secret Service in cavorting with the daughters of desire in Cartagena, insists that loose women are “incompatible” with military life. (Who knew?) A soldier, seaman or Marine caught paying for sex faces a court martial and could spend a year in the brig or stockade. But if the military enforces this rule, it will deplete the ranks and shutter the thousands of massage parlors and other dens of sensual suggestion surrounding military bases around the world.

… After more than 450 days in the majority, House Republicans have still failed to produce a meaningful job creation agenda,” said Rep. Baca. “Today’s vote to approve this misguided tax giveaway for the wealthy serves as yet another example of their misplaced priorities. H.R. 9 does absolutely nothing to create any new jobs here at home, and even worse, it irresponsibly increases our deficit by $46 billion alone in 2013.”
H.R. 9 provides a 20% tax cut on business income for entities with fewer than 500 employees –over 99% of all businesses in America. This tax giveaway is available to any business smaller than 500 employees, including corporations that ship jobs overseas, organizations that have been found guilty of employee discrimination, and businesses like massage parlors and dog tracks. Economists estimate that H.R. 9 adds $46 billion in deficit spending to our budget in 2013, and could add as much as half a trillion dollars to our deficit in total.

WASHINGTON – In the wake of Hurricane Katrina in 2005, Congress took legislative action to provide desperately needed relief to the Gulf Coast. Excluded from the relief bill, was golf and the facilities damaged by a 100-year storm. Golf facilities were ineligible for aid from the bill, lumped together with businesses like massage parlors and casinos.
It was that slight – repeated since in other legislative exclusions – to a game perceived as a niche for well-to-do Caucasian men that coalesced the industry to convince Washington of the widespread positive impact the game has on the economy. Four years later, a golf industry group called We Are Golf convened for the fifth National Golf Day in Washington.
“We don’t want to be given special treatment compared to other industries. We just want to play from the same set of tees,” PGA of America CEO Joe Steranka said Wednesday.

… WE ARE GOLF was formed a few years ago in part because it had become clear that golf was misunderstood by too many of our nation’s policymakers. There were longstanding perceptions of the game that simply didn’t square with the facts,” said Joe Steranka, CEO of the PGA of America and Board Chair of WE ARE GOLF. “That’s why we set out to do a better job explaining our profound impact on communities around the country. By showcasing that impact, we are aiming to level the playing field for the thousands of small businesses that make up our industry, and their employees.
“We are very encouraged by the progress we’ve made in a short amount of time. It’s clear to us that more members of Congress now understand that for nearly 2 million Americans, golf is more than just a game. They understand it never made sense to exclude golf – along with massage parlors and liquor stores and tanning salons – from tax relief legislation. They understand what golf brings to their communities. As a result, golf is no longer being excluded from important legislation.

Columbia is notorious for prostitution. In fact prostitution in Colombiais legal as long as it is done in designated “tolerance zones”. Prostitution is common place, widespread and exacerbated by poverty and internal displacement. It is estimated that there are 35,000 children working as prostitutes in Colombia with between 5,000 and 10,000 of them on the streets of Bogotá alone.
A spokesman for the UN’s children’s fund, UNICEF, Karel de Rooy, said many child prostitutes were as young as nine years old and that clients were often middle-aged foreigners. He also said that the children were often addicted to drugs.
Commercial sexual exploitation of children is found especially in urban centers and in areas where there are large numbers of men who are separated from families due to work. Children are involved in commercial sexual exploitation either on the streets or in private establishments such as bars, brothels, or massage parlors.

DJ: Modern day slavery is amongst the most unjust crimes being committed worldwide, including in our Baltimore suburb area. In a county that celebrates freedom it is estimated that 100,000 American children’s lives and futures are owned by someone else. This is not just a crime against women and children. There are no gender, sex, race, socioeconomic boundaries to these crimes against an individual’s freedom. If being owned is not enough of an injustice the violence, coercion, and abuse is devastating among these victims.
TRW: What are some stories that you think are particularly striking?
DJ: I am an empathetic person, and all injustice infuriates me. In August this year, while attending my first meeting at the Maryland Coalition, I learned that there is a massage parlor in Howard County that I pass every single day on my way to UMBC that has been shut down twice for human trafficking. This was a shock. I then watched the Truckers Against Trafficking video where I learned this is a serious issue on my own suburban America street. This isn’t just a border patrol issue our own citizens are involved.

Odlum, who once served as a diplomat for St Lucia, acknowledged that while human trafficking is monitored by various international agencies, including the OAS, there is still a gray area where a definition as concerned.
The OAS, like the United Nations, views human trafficking as a means of exploiting human beings for revenue through sex, forced labour and human organs. However other organisations and governments may vary their definition.
Odlum explained that tourism-dependent countries, like those within the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS), are not quick to acknowledge the presence of trafficking in the sub-region.
“We know that these exotic bars etc, etc, are cover-ups for some very brutal existences that women are undergoing as sex workers, as exotic dancers, as people who are in massage parlours and things like that. So I think there is a whole discourse which needs to be had honestly and sensitively where the OECS Caribbean nations are concerned,” she said.

TK Therapy was one of the suspected brothels that police and drug task force members raided on Friday, police said Tuesday.
Members of the Metropolitan Area Drug Task Force (MADTF) and the Greenbelt Police Department raided three Greenbelt establishments that were operating under the guise of acupuncture and massage parlors, according to a police press release.
Two of the establishments were also raided last summer. One was an acupuncture health facility, operating from a business complex at 7335 Hanover Parkway, Suite C & D, in Greenbelt, police said.
The other was Rising Sun Massage, located at 7743 Belle Pointe Drive in Greenbelt, according to Kelly Lawson, spokeswoman for the Greenbelt Police.
TK Therapy, located at 7525 Greenway Center Drive, Suite 116, was not raided by police last year.
Patch attempted to contact TK Therapy, but TK Therapy did not respond by post time.

Police raided three acupuncture and massage parlors in Greenbelt on Friday that investigators believe were being used as brothels, authorities said.
Police said the parlors in the 7700 block of Belle Pointe Drive, the 7300 block Hanover Parkway and the 7500 block of Greenway Center Drive had been raided last year, but the businesses apparently kept allowing customers to pay for sex acts. They said investigators seized cash and were working to compile criminal charges.
