Well, here’s a real non-surprise: Jenny Sanford, the put-upon wife of S.C. Gov. Mark Sanford, is filing for divorce. You could see that one coming from the moment her love-struck husband stood up in public and called his mistress his “soulmate” while vowing that, nevertheless, he would labor diligently to try to fall back in love with his wife.
For professional women of my generation, Jenny Sanford is intriguing, but she shouldn’t be. She surprises, but she shouldn’t. Her actions are perfectly rational for a well-educated and independent woman who had a successful career before she married.
But she’s a rarity. Most political wives, literally, stand by their foolish philandering husbands, managing a moonstruck gaze even as the errant husband stands before microphones publically confessing his sins. From Silda Wall, the attorney wife of disgraced former New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer, to Wendy Vitter, the attorney wife of prostitute-patronizing Sen. David Vitter, wives of politicians not only remain married (which may be a rational decision), they publicly lend support to their philandering husbands (which is not).
