There have also been calls to hire a private security firm, track court cases involving suspects in local crimes, ask landlords not to rent to people who have long criminal histories, and expand the city’s Purple Line bus circulator into Charles Village until a proposed trolley line between downtown Baltimore and Charles Village is built.
“The idea being, if there was some regular, reliable (public) transportation to this area, people would be safer” than if they have to walk, Clarke said.
On Saturday, tensions ran high over what approaches the community should take to help Northern District police fight crime.
Jennifer Martin, of Charles Village, questioned the effectiveness of patrols in general, arguing it is “pie in the sky” to place “a cop on every corner,” and that strengthening neighborhoods block by block by making sure residents get to know one another and are watchful will provide “more bang for the buck.”
But Peter Duvall, of the Old Goucher neighborhood in south Charles Village, said late-night patrols have helped reduce prostitution, a big problem in the area.
